Building your library...Part 6, Mid-late 18th century music for C recorder

Today the GFC of the ARS continues its' exploration of music for C recorder. This information was originally presented during the January meeting. These lists are by no means exhaustive.

Mid-late 18th Century…

Baston, John. Concerto no. 6 in D Major. London: Schott Music, Ltd., 1991.

John Baston wrote 6 concerti for various recorders. Numbers 1 and 3 were written for Alto. Numbers 2, 4, and 5 were written for recorders called Fourth Flute and Sixth Flute. These recorders are technically Sopranos in B-flat and D respectively. Concerto number 6 was specifically written for Descant (Fifth flute) recorder. Several publishers have transposed concerti 2, 4, and 5 for Descant recorder. These pieces are available on IMSLP.

Hook, James. Six Sonatas op. 54. Stuttgart: Carus-Verlag. 1996.

These very classical sonatas allow for flexible instrumentation. Violin, transverse flute, and recorder are all possible melody instruments. Sonata no. 3 in G Major works well on C recorder and was on the Trinity College list for the intermediate recorder course.

Sammartini, Guiseppe. Concerto in F Major. London: Schott, 1984.

This is a late baroque/early classical concerto that specifically calls for the Descant recorder. How do we know that it was written for descant recorder? Easy, the range extends to a middle C (c4) which the transverse flute of the time could not play.
