During the month of June, our chapter organized and completed our first collaborative play-along video. Our goal during June was to find "new" ways to continue to make music together as we continue to "play it safe"during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eight members signed up to record a part from a pre-selected piece of music. The recording process was fun, interesting, and only occasionally technically frustrating. We may do another collaboration in the future.
And now a little something about the piece we chose...
The Album for the Young Op.68, No. 4. Choral “Freue dich, o meine Seele,” was arranged by Schumann from the Bach’s Cantata BWV 32, Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen. The Choral is movement 6 in the Cantata.
Album for the Young op. 68 was composed in 1848 for Schumann’s three daughters. The collection consists of 43 pieces that are supposed to be suitable for children or beginning piano students. While the pieces themselves might not be technically difficult, the compositions in the collection are held together with complex themes. The dominant thematic material for many of the movements comes from the Choral “Freue dich, o meine Seele.” While no. 4, the Choral, is lifted note for note from Bach’s cantata many of the remaining movements contain clever permutations of the melody.
The title of the choral translate as, "Rejoice greatly, o my Soul."
