Chapter news: February 2020 meeting

In February the GFC of the ARS met to discuss methods of transposing/switching from C to F (or vise versa) recorders. We learned that there are three principal ways of transposing.


The first method is the most common among woodwind players today and involves the clef staying the same while the printed pitches and key signature change. This allows the player to keep the same fingering associations from instrument to instrument.


The second method of transposition was to keep the printed pitches the same while changing the clef and the key signature. The player could then use his/her favorite finger associations for each pitch.


The final method of transposition involved the all the music being written in C and for the player to change his/her pitch associations for each fingering. It is this method that the GFC of the ARS tackled at our meeting and did we have fun!
