March is "Play the Recorder" Month

Happy "Play the Recorder" Month! For the month of March we will be shouting from the roof tops that the recorder is for everyone! EVERYONE! Rich, poor, short, tall, old, young, and even those with one hand. And there is music for every taste as well. The recorder's repertoire covers 900 years and composers are still writing and arranging for the instrument.

1. Today we are looking at a little duet from the late middle-ages: Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300-1377) wrote many sacred and secular works that can incorporate instruments. https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/7/75/IMSLP533737-PMLP863145-Machaut_Je_ne_cuit_pas.pdf

2. It's time for the Renaissance edition of, "Play the Recorder Month" is awesome. Today's composer is Aurelio Virgiliano (c. 1600). He is most known for his "treatise", "Dolcimelo" which is dated between 1589 and 1625. "Dolcimelo" contains examples of diminutions in melodic passages. 3. March 4, Happy Birthday to Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) born this day in Venice Italy. His compositions for recorder still challenge, delight and vex us over 300 years later.

4.Happy Birthday Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (1714-1788), C.P.E, the second son of J.S. Bach, is mostly known for his keyboard works. He also wrote a good number of works for the transverse flute. But did you know he wrote a Trio Sonata for BASS RECORDER, viola, and continuo? I've included a link to the manuscript, but if you search around IMSLP.org, you can find other public domain versions depending on your location.

5. As today IS St. Patrick's day, we've decided to continue our Play-the-Recorder Month celebration by linking to a website with traditional Irish tin whistle sheet music: https://www.irish-folk-songs.com/traditional-tunes-for...

Recorder is for everyone and can play almost anything!

Check back here throughout the month as we post more music for you to explore during "Play the Recorder" Month.

6. March 21, Happy Birthday to J.S. Bach (1685-1750) born on this day in 1685! Where would we recorder players be without our beloved Brandenburg Concerti? Recorder, Brandenburg 2: https://ks4.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/d/dd/IMSLP37609-PMLP82078-Bach-BWV1047.Flute.pdf

7. In today's edition of "Play the Recorder Month: There is music for EVERYONE," we have some (free) links from both the Baroque (1600-1750) and Classical (1750-1800) eras. There are more unaccompanied music for recorder than just the Telemann Fantasias. If you are in the mood for unaccompanied pieces, why not try these lovely Airs for alto recorder?: Sir George Bingham (50 Airs)https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/7/73/IMSLP364874-PMLP589249-Airs_Anglois_1.pdf From the Classical Era there is a lovely volume of Mozart Sonatinas available for purchase:(https://www.di-arezzo.com/music/97657/wolfgang-amadeus-mozart-2-sonatinen-blockflote-violine-klavier-sheet-music-piano-recorder.html) But we here at the GFC of the ARS are cheap, so here are some free scores: Mozart: Sonatina in C arr. recorder and guitar https://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=35964# Haydn: Melodies from Keyboard Sonatas arr for Bass recorder: https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/1/1c/IMSLP220998-WIMA.ce7c-BRS09.pdf

8. Happy Birthday (or at least Baptism day) to Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1785). Hasse was a composer, singer, and teacher. While he is most known for his vocal works, he left behind a number of delightful sonatas for traverso and a few newly discovered sonatas for recorder.

9. Play the Recorder Month is not over yet! In today's edition of "Play the Recorder Month: There is music for EVERYONE" we are looking at 19th century music for a close relative of the recorder, the csakan. Fortunately, its' repertoire fits brilliantly on C recorders. Enjoy! Romantic: Heberle- Sonate Brillante:https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/3/3e/IMSLP523215-PMLP847075-Heberle_Sonate_Brillante.pdf

10. In today's edition of "Play the Recorder Month: There is music for EVERYONE", in the past 60-70 years, the recorder has been getting some serious and long overdue technical development. Many makers are experimenting with keys, and different windway materials. But we don't need a fancy new recorder to play music written during the 20th and 21st centuries. I've found several public domain selections written during the 20th and 21st centuries for us to enjoy. And check out the hand engraving on the Sardelli Sonata. It's beautiful. 20th century Sardelli-Sonata for Soprano Recorder:https://ks4.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/f/fb/IMSLP513857-PMLP832922-Sonata_a_Flauto_Solo_in_Do_magg._1989.pdf 21st century Jashiin: https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/6/61/IMSLP92453-PMLP190561-pieces-for-recorder.pdf Fine: New Year's Greeting for Solo Recorder: https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/3/39/IMSLP405149-PMLP656092-New_Year's_Greeting_for_Solo_Recorder.pdf #recorder #recorderplayer #recorders #blockflote #ars #playtherecordermonth #fredericksburgva #staffordva #eaglerecorders #helderrecorders
